Blog Your Blessing : Bridges

via advertising-for-success.blogspot.com

I love bridges, the physical type. One of the trips on my bucket list is to see every 100-year old truss bridge in Texas.

Metaphysical, emotional and economic bridges exist as well. Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Bridge the Digital Divide, Bridging the Gender Gap, Bridges to Babylon . . .

Below I have written some of my favorite quotations about bridges. If you have one, please share it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know, I do speak the Queens English. It's just the wrong Queens that's all. It's over the 59th Street Bridge. It's not over the Atlantic Ocean. ~Cyndi Lauper~
A politician is a man who will double cross that bridge when he comes to it. ~Oscar Levant~
I consider myself to have been the bridge between the shotgun and the binoculars in bird watching. Before I came along, the primary way to observe birds was to shoot them and stuff them. ~Roger Tory Peterson~ (wrote many birding guides)
If you hug to yourself any resentment against anybody else, you destroy the bridge by which God would come to you. ~Peter Marshall~
One of the dreams of Zionism was to be a bridge. Instead, we are creating exclusion between the East and the West instead of creating bridges; we are contributing to the conflict between East and West by our stupid desire to have more. ~A. B. Yehoshua~
Tell Your Story in Six Words
via advertising-for-success.blogspot.com
Ernest Hemmingway was once asked to tell a story in six words. Almost immediately, he returned with "For sale: baby shoes, never worn."
Could you write a story with six words? Tell your life story in six words? For more information or to submit an official six word memoir, visit Six-Word Memoirs at SMITH Magazine. If you are not submitting to the site, please leave your six-word stories in a comment.
Here are a few of mine to get you started:
Raised in the 1960s. Still kicking.
Celebrate, laugh, live long and prosper.
Drinking and driving too fast. Buried today.
More Information Than We Need
via advertising-for-success.blogspot.com
If you cannot stand to watch the video, here are the tips in writing:
  • Trim, lather up with some shave gel and ensure you're using a fresh blade.
  • Pull your skin taut, and as flat as possible. Don't exert pressure; let the razor do the work.
  • Use short, light strokes to minimize nicks, cuts and scratches.
I would add one:
  • Be very, very careful . . . LOL
Blog Your Blessing : Heart of Earth Songs
via advertising-for-success.blogspot.com
I love moving water. We camped for three weeks at Medina Lake. The river recharges my psyche and soothes my worries. I usually do not want to come back home after a stay at the river. Is there a specific waterway that calls to you? Or. are you like the mole below--any river will do?
~From The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham~
He thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river. Never in his life had he seen a river before -- this sleek, sinuous, full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh, to fling itself on fresh playmates that shook themselves free, and were caught and held again. All as a-shake and a-shiver -- glints and gleams and sparkles, rustle and swirl, chatter and bubble.
The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated. By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spellbound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea.
~From The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham~
The American outdoors has been central to some of this country's greatest books, from Henry David Thoreau's The Maine Woods to Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi. Writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Muir, Rachel Carson, Peter Matthiessen, and E.O. Building a Blogging Community
via advertising-for-success.blogspot.com
Over at SlogBite, there is an article about the 13 Rules of Blogger Etiquette. I think these items of netiquette should be adopted by all who want to be part of the blogging community. They should be taught to new bloggers, along with the best way to remove the NAV bar from Blogger.
Now, dropping your EntreCard is not conducive to exploring blogs and commenting on posts. I think memes are better, because you come to the blog to read the meme post. However, with the advent of Mr. Linky, sidebar busting blogrolls, most people are not visiting, from blog to blog, in a way that builds community.
Join Click and Comment Monday in the post below if you wish to build community.
WordPress Angels Rescued Me
via advertising-for-success.blogspot.com
I spent all day Saturday backing up my files for my WordPress blog on TexasRVTravel.com so that I could upgrade to the latest WordPress and get rid of some malicious code that had found its way into my template files.
Then I spent all day Sunday downloading and scanning all the content, themes and "stuff"--there is a lot of "stuff" with WordPress. Then I installed the new WordPress and uploaded my clean content and TA-DA . . . no blog.
I was just about out of my mind (what I have left of it) and was really discouraged and ready to delete the darn blog and restart it on blogger. I think if I could have transferred all the posts back to blogger, I would have done it.
Alas, that was not do-able, so I went begging for help on the WordPress forum on the CMF-Ads forum. Now, Lindi from Let's Talk WordPress had already told me how to upgrade and answered a lot of questions before I started upgrading.
However, the real HERO in this story is Jenny from Fabulously Jinxed. She went on my site and found the problem within minutes--MINUTES! This was at 10 PM on Mother's Day after she had worked all day.
I am humbled by the help that came my way on Mother's Day. God bless both these bloggers with their helpful hearts and technical knowledge.
CSC: Coming soon to a cell phone near you
via advertising-for-success.blogspot.com
Common Short Code (CSC)
Short code marketing uses text and multimedia messages sent through a common short code (CSC) of 5 or 6 digits. Short code marketing made a big splash when CSC user 62262 (Obama) sent a message about his vice-presidential choice last August. Nielsen estimates that this text message was received by 2.9 million mobile phone users over the last weekend in August of 2008.
Graphs from NielsenRight Click Image to View Larger Graphs in another Window
According to Nielsen:
. . . 57 percent of all mobile subscribers ages 13 and older use text messaging on a regular basis. Text messaging has become so popular, in fact, that U.S. mobile subscribers now send and receive more text messages in a month than they make phone calls.
According to the Common Short Code Association (CSCA):
Telenor, a European wireless carrier, generated $85 million in revenue from CSCs in less than a year after their introduction.
Short Code Marketing
Is it worth the price to sign up for a Common Short Code (CSC)? What type of cell phone users would the CSCs reach? How to begin sending CSCs?
The revenue opportunities for CSCs are in marketing, advertising, entertainment and commerce. See The Market for Common Short Codes on the Common Short Code Administration (CSCA) website.
Registering and leasing a CSC costs $1,000 per month for a vanity CSC (Obama) and $500 per month for each random CSC. The fees are due up front and are non refundable. Then, you must go through providers of content, applications or wireless services--or connection aggregators-- to use your CSC. It can be an expensive proposition.
Content providers are well-known media outlets. Application providers develop and host mobile messaging software. The CSC must be set up and tested to route from a wireless network to the application. Message routing is done through a connectivity aggregator or to the application provider directly. Connection aggregators have authorized connections to multiple wireless networks.
A complete marketing solution incorporates domestic acceptance of CSC, a premium billing capability and valuable content. I would expect that networks of marketers will form to share cost and revenue.
Marketers must comply with guidelines written by the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA).
According to the MMA:
Current internet marketing and privacy standards do not adequately address the specific challenges faced by marketers when marketing through the mobile channel. Strong mobile industry privacy principles will protect the mobile channel from abuses by unethical marketers, and limit consumer backlash and additional regulatory scrutiny.
Is Your Blog Mobile Friendly?
via advertising-for-success.blogspot.com
In January 2009, 63.2 million people accessed the mobile Internet using their cell phones and handheld devices. Thirty-five percent of these people (22.4 million) reported they used the mobile Internet on a daily basis. This is more than double the size of the mobile Internet users (10.8 million) in January 2008.
Males, 18-34-years-old, account for half of mobile Internet users. Females in the same age group are beginning to use the mobile web; with 40 percent accessing the mobile Internet at least once in January 2009.
From comScore: Mobile Internet Becoming A Daily Activity For Many
Those who visited social networking sites or blogs grew even faster--up to 9.3 million from 1.8 million a year ago. The number of mobile subscribers accessing financial accounts and movie information roughly tripled to more than 3 million, while the number of users accessing business news and directories more than doubled to 2.4 million and 5.5 million, respectively.
Is your blog mobile friendly? If not, you may want to develop a mobile version of your blog. It is quick and easy at MoFuse. Below the steps are numbered and illustrated.
A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature.
It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder
measures the depth of his own nature.
~Henry David Thoreau~
Stubblefield Lake is an oxbow lake that was separated from Lake Conroe by the wanderings of the West Fork of the San Jacinto River. It is quiet and peaceful, just as it is unexpected only miles away from the Stubblefield oil field.
CyberCelt 50+ Years Old
I have learned that:
  • you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in.
  • one good turn gets most of the blankets.
  • you should not compare yourself to others. They are more screwed up than you think.
  • depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.
  • age is a very high price to pay for maturity.
  • I do not suffer from insanity; I enjoy it.
  • we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.
  • artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
  • 99 percent of the time when something is not working, one of your kids did it.
  • there is a fine line between genius and insanity.
  • the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon and the less important ones just never go away.
